I rarely get to hold a $100 bill, but yesterday I had one. I know that many retailers can't "break" a hundred dollar bill simply because the only keep so much change at any given time in the cash register.
Yesterday, I went to load up on food, treats and other stuff for my animals at Petsmart. As I approached the cashier, I thought I would pay for it out of the $100 dollar bill I had. After she rang it all up, she gave me the total of 97 dollars and change. Out of habit I said, "Can you break a hundred dollar bill, or would you prefer I use a credit card?" I realized as it came out of my mouth how stupid that was...and I paid for it. She looked at me and said, "I think I have 3 dollars."
